Secat Announces 5 Year Anniversary in the Fall of 2004
Five years ago, the concept of Secat, Inc.
was just a vision. Now, in 2005, the vision
is reality. Secat represents an innovative
model of research and development for the manufacturing industry with
it's mission to provide a collaborative environment for both companies
and interested governmental agencies and universities to work together
to keep an industry on the leading edge of new technology, new products
and processes, and retaining high quality through testing and analysis.
The Secat Board of Directors recognized the
anniversary on October 12, 2004 with a dinner
at the home of Dr. Lee Todd, President of
the University of Kentucky. We welcome you
to visit our facility in Coldstream Research
Park in Lexington, KY and discuss how the
Secat business model operates and tour our
laboratories.

Aluminum's Deja Vu Defense
By Subodh K. Das, Published by Automotive Design & Production
Plodding along while steel blunted each of its advantages and
delivered common products to automakers at lower prices, the
aluminum industry must take a page from the steel industry’s
playbook if it hopes to be more than the perennial “material
of the future.” READ

Energy Implications of Aluminum Smelting v Remelting
A recent article in the Journal of Materials, published by TMS, addresses the issues involved when primary aluminum smelter facilities shut down and relocate overseas, driven out of the U.S. by high energy costs.
One significant trend noted in the article is that 80% of the smelting capacity that was operating in 1980 will be shut down in the near future, while the need for recycled scrap will grow 3.6% per year. (Secat projections). The energy differences between smelting and re-melting promise savings that will increase over the years, with a crossover occuring in 2006 where remelting energy savings will overtake gains in energy efficiency in primary production.
This in-depth article was published in the August, 2004 issue of JOM, and authored by Subodh K. Das of Secat, Inc. along with W. Jerry Long III, H. Wayne Hayden, John S. Green and Warren H. Hunt, Jr.
The article may be viewed online by TMS members, or purchased through the TMS site, or read from the JOM August print publication.

Grant received to help aluminum industry reduce energy use
| A grant from the U.S. Department of Energy was recently awarded
to the Secat and the University of Kentucky to improve energy
efficiency in the aluminum industry. The study, led by Secat,
involves nine aluminum companies, two national research laboratories
and UK. Over a three-year period, these partners will be developing
processes that reduce the amount of energy needed to heat molten
aluminum. This not only helps reduce energy costs, but also
benefits the environment by producing less waste. MORE...
